WEIGHT WATCHERS MINT MOJITO RECIPE
Mojito Pour 3/4 of an ounce (about half a shot) fresh lime juice into a glass. Add one packet of sucralose sweetener (such as Splenda) and four or five mint leaves. Stir until the sweetener dissolves. Add a shot of light rum and several ice cubes. Top with 2 ounces club soda and a sprig of mint.

A GROWER like Beier's Greenhouse grows plants from seeds or from vegetative cutting. We begin growing around February 15th and schedule our seeding to benefit the Spring Customer. This ensures that the time it takes to go from seed to flowering will coincide with the Northern Gardener's planting schedule.

Blueberry Care

Blueberry Care
These tips will help you get the MOST out of your blueberry plants!

Site and Soil
Plant blueberries where they have full sunlight most or part of the day. The soil should be acidic (pH 4.5-5.5), well-drained and porous, and high in organic matter. They are shallow-rooted plants and must be irrigated, heavily mulched, or planted in soil with a high water table. However, they cannot tolerate standing in water.
Your county extension agent can help you test the soil (see "Extension Offices" at www.extension.umn.edu). If the soil is not acid enough, it can be acidified by:
Mixing equal parts of acid peat and garden soil. This should be done at least 6 months before planting.
Adding sulfur at the rate of 1 pound per 100 square feet. The soil can then be maintained by annually adding acid-forming fertilizer such as ammonium sulfate.
Using pine bark, pine straw or sawdust mulch two or three inches deep. Mulch also controls weeds and retains moisture.

Planting Your Blueberries
Early spring planting is recommended. Set the plants four feet apart in rows six feet apart. Blueberries have a very shallow root system, so plant at the same level as they are grown in the nursery. They will have a definite line that shows you the right depth. Firm soil, mulch, and water to set the roots.
To improve productivity, plant at least two varieties. Blueberries require cross-pollination.

Fertilizer
Fertilize in early spring. Apply a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10. Also, Azalea-Rhododendron fertilizer is good for blueberries.
When using mulch, a high nitrogen fertilizer is necessary since decomposing mulch removes nitrogen from the soil. In early spring just before the buds break, apply about 2 ounces (1/4 cup) of ammonium sulfate under the branches around each plant.

Pruning
Prune any time from leaf fall until growth begins again in the spring. From the time of planting until the end of the third growing season, remove only the dead or injured branches, and branches too close to the ground.
As the bushes come into bearing (usually in the fourth growing season), regular pruning is necessary. Remove dead or injured branches, branches too close to the ground, and trim back bushy twigs.

Pest Control
Blueberries are easy care plants that rarely require chemical intervention. Birds love blueberries, so cover with plastic netting supported by a light framework.
Remove overripe fruit and diseased branches. If insects become a problem, use Ortho Fruit and Vegetable Insect Control. For fungicide, use Ortho Captan or Benomyl.

Winter Protection
Face it, in Minnesota we all need a little protection from the winter. Covering with straw in the fall reduces plant injury. Some gardeners use wire fence to contain this kind of mulch. Cover them up after the plants have been subjected to a few good frosts.

How To Plant Your Tree Properly

While planting different types of trees differs in the details, all trees eventually end up in a hole. But not any old hole will do.

The most common mistake when planting a tree is a digging hole, which is both too deep and too narrow. Too deep and the roots don't have access to sufficient oxygen to ensure proper growth. Too narrow and the root structure can't expand sufficiently to nourish and properly anchor the tree.

As a general rule, trees should be transplanted no deeper than the soil in which they were originally grown. The width of the hole should be at least 3 times the diameter of the root ball or container or the spread of the roots in the case of bare root trees. This will provide the tree with enough worked earth for its root structure to establish itself.

When digging in poorly drained clay soil, it is important to avoid 'glazing'. Glazing occurs when the sides and bottom of a hole become smoothed forming a barrier, through which water has difficulty passing. To break up the glaze, use a fork to work the bottom and drag the points along the sides of the completed hole. Also, raising the bottom of the hole slightly higher than the surrounding area. This allows water to disperse, reducing the possibility of water pooling in the planting zone.

Beier's Greenhouse will be hosting our first ever Build-Your-Own Terrarium Class this spring! Here is a short article to give you some quick info about Terrariums. If you are interested in a PRE-SEASON Terrarium class, email us at beiersgreenhouse@beiersgreenhouse.com!

TERRARIUMS

What is a terrarium?
A terrarium is a small, closed or open glass container in which living plants are grown and kept. They combine art with nature and are miniature, self-sufficient environments.

How much care, water, and light do terrariums require?
Very little! One of the nicest things about growing plants in terrariums is that they require almost no care at all, and they actually almost thrive on neglect! Terrariums are perfect for those without much time on their hands, or if those hands lack green thumbs.

Open or closed terrarium?
Closed terrariums recycle moisture with high efficiency, but they are more prone to disease than are open terrariums. Open terrariums need more regular watering and are great for beginners.

Honduras Mission

Last February, the owner of Beier's Greenhouse accompanied other mission workers from the Grand Rapids area to El Paraiso, Honduras to help build a home with a bathroom and supply the the village with food, clothing, shoes and school supplies. Blake and Bonnie Stotts are committed to the children of Honduras and will be returning again next year to aid in another home building as well as supply distribution. Beier's Greenhouse will sponsor events through out the year with proceeds going towards the Honduras Mission Trip. Please watch this blog for more information about specific ways you can help. Meet Jarrod & Tiffiney! These two wonderful people here are Bonnie's children and served many, many years as the arms and legs of the business when their mother needed them most. Jarrod took the nursery and landscape section of the greenhouse and helped make it what it is today. Tiffiney assisted her mother in daily functions of the greenhouse as well as overall administrative and business functions. Together, they were a great team. Now, Jarrod and Tiffiney are off on their own business ventures, but still can be seen from time to time helping out. Tiffiney's husband, Jacob, can also be found lending a hand from time to time!! Plant of the Week- Dianthus "Firewitch" (Perennial)

Many of you have probably noticed the very cool Moss Chair in the greenhouse this year. Want to learn how to cover your own chair or container? Well, here is you chance!! On Wednesday, June 16th from 10-12 and on Thursday, June 17th from 10-12, Beier's will be holding a Moss Covering Class. There are a few spots still open for Wednesday class, but many spots are still available for the Thursday class.

What you will need:

-An Item to Moss

-Sheet Moss (from woods or purchased

at Beier's).

-Glue Gun and Glue Sticks

-Gloves (preferably leather)

-Fun Attitude

The class fee is $15.00, which does not include materials. Classes are scheduled for two hours to allow enough time for you to finish your project. Depending on the size and intricacy of you item, you may finish early or have to bring your project home to finish. If you are interested in attending or would like more information, please e-mail us at beiersgreenhouse@hotmail.com. A RSVP is required to attend.

We've had a very busy (and productive) winter and spring getting the greenhouse all spruced up, remodeled and painted to expand our plant selection and to make your shopping experience more bright and sunny!!
